I keep wondering what the heat index was during all this. Temperatures around 40 aren't uncommon where I am in the summer, but typically the humidity drops way down as the day progresses. That kind of landscape holds a lot of water so it would be muggy, I'd think, and quite dangerous.
I'd say as well that if it's always been hot where you are (in the desert right?) the buildings will be designed for coolness, whereas here they are designed for heat retention
Insulation works both ways, but the best houses are adobe and they are few and far between around here. It does help when they are protected from western exposure. If you are designing for heat retention you will maximize southern/western exposure and yeah that's no good during a heat wave. But mostly people here just run massive amounts of a/c and keep the windows shut
I come from a country with historically extremely inadequate insulation practices so I've lived in a lot of 'wooden tents' (my friend Sammy’s phrase). Now living in a new-build, thank goodness
